① Hydrocolloid or water-soluble polymer. It improves the rheological value through hydrogen bonds formed by the hydration of polymer chains and water molecules. This is purely thickening the water phase.
②Associative thickener. This is a type of hydrophilic polymer with some hydrophobic groups that can act on many points in the system. Its direct thickening of the water phase is very limited, but it has a strong ability to associate with polymer particles, fillers and pigment particles.
③ Rheological resin, the so-called microgel.
④ Inorganic thickeners, namely flake inorganic silicon, are often used as synergistic thickeners in water-based coatings.
Certain thickeners are very active in water-based systems, just like protective glues in emulsion synthesis. Associative thickeners generally have a structure similar to polymeric surfactants. Microgel has the function of auxiliary binder. Inorganic thickeners also have a filling effect similar to fillers.
