Application of BYK additives in epoxy floor paint

As industrial plants, large hospitals, and advanced sports grounds have higher and higher requirements on the ground, epoxy floor paint has become one of the fastest-growing paint types in the coatings industry. Epoxy floor coatings have many advantages:
The surface is smooth and clean, with no gaps on the whole, no accumulation of dust and bacteria, easy to clean; strong chemical corrosion resistance, impact resistance, wear resistance;
The colors are colorful and rich, and the decoration is strong.

Epoxy floor coatings can meet the needs of industrial production workshops and the requirements of modern management, and are widely used in the coating of workshops and corridor floors in the pharmaceutical, computer, plastic, textile, food and hospital industries. Epoxy floor paint is divided into solvent-based epoxy floor paint and solvent-free epoxy floor paint.

The application of BYK additives in solvent epoxy floor paint is introduced below. Solvent-based epoxy floor paint is divided into primer, midway and topcoat. Primers are generally not adjuvanted, while basecoats and topcoats require adjuvants to improve certain properties.

1 medium coat

The intermediate coating should consider how to prevent the floating color of the pigment and how to prevent the sag and sedimentation of the pigment and filler. At this time, the use of controlled flocculation type wetting and dispersing agent AT-203 or AT-204 should be considered. These two wetting and dispersing agents can also be used in combination with organic bentonite, as the activator of bentonite, so that the bentonite slurry made has excellent anti-settling and anti-sagging effects. Here’s how to combine AT-203 or AT-204 with bentonite to make a bentonite slurry:

Solvent: 85%~87%

Bentonite: 10%

Additives: 3%~5% ( AT-203 or AT-204 )

Total: 100%

It should be noted that when AT-203 is used, the solvent must be aromatic or aromatic-containing solvent gasoline; when AT-204 is used, it can be free of aromatic solvent.

2 top coats

In the topcoat, it is necessary to consider how to prevent the floating color of the pigment, the leveling and smoothness of the paint film surface, the defoaming of the system, how to reduce the gloss of the paint film, and how to increase the protection of the paint film.

2.1 Prevent the floating color of the pigment

In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to use the deflocculating wetting and dispersing agent ATU, which has a better dispersion and stabilization effect on inorganic pigments. Of course, for titanium dioxide, we should use the wetting and dispersing agent BYK-110 specially designed for titanium dioxide. For the dispersion of organic pigments, BYK-161 should be used, because BYK-161 is a high molecular weight wetting and dispersing additive, which can effectively adsorb on the surface of organic pigments and has a good dispersion and stability effect on organic pigments. For the co-grinding of titanium dioxide and phthalocyanine blue, a controlled flocculation dispersant BYK-P104S is also required, which can effectively prevent the system from floating and blooming, but it will increase the viscosity of the system, so The addition amount should not be too large, generally accounting for less than 5‰ of the total formula amount. Whether it is ATU, BYK-110 or BYK-161, they can significantly reduce the viscosity of the abrasive, improve the gloss, increase the flow properties of the paint, and thus also improve the leveling of the paint film.

2.2 Leveling of paint film

The fluidity of epoxy floor paint is very important, in order to improve the leveling, you can use silicone additive BYK-320, or use acrylic leveling agent BYK-354, BYK-358N, BYK-361N. BYK-361N is the solvent-free form of BYK-358N, and BYK-354 has a higher molecular weight and also has a defoaming effect in the system. BYK-OK is a high-boiling point solvent without silicone, which can adjust the drying time of the paint film, especially in summer, when the temperature is high and the temperature is high, the surface of the paint film is prone to shrinkage. solve this problem.

2.3 The slipperiness of the paint film

Silicone additives can increase the slipperiness of the paint film surface, thus also improving the scratch resistance of the paint film surface. Because they reduce the surface tension of the paint film, improve the wetting of the substrate and prevent cratering. BYK-307 and BYK-335 can be used for this purpose. The slip properties of the paint film can also be improved by micronized waxes, Ceraflor-996 (PE/PTFE) and Ceraflor-980 (PTFE) can be used.

2.4 Defoaming of the system

To eliminate foaming of the system, silicone defoamer BYK-066N, silicone-free polymer defoamer BYK-057 can be used. In addition, BYK-A530 has been successfully used in epoxy systems in recent years. It contains both silicone and a polymer, so it has better bonding properties.

2.5 Reduce gloss

To reduce the gloss of epoxy floor paints, BYK wax additives can be used. Wax dispersions Ceramat-151, micronized waxes Ceraflour-995, Ceraflour-950 can be used.

2.6 Structural pattern

Some floor coatings need to have structural patterns on the surface. In this case, BYK wax additives Ceraflour-914, Ceraflour-915 and Ceraflour-916 can be used. The difference between the three is that the particle size is different. C-916 has the coarsest particle with an average particle size of 46 μm; C-914 has the smallest particle size with an average particle size of 28 μm.

2.7 Surface protection of paint film

The surface protection of epoxy floor paint is very important, and anti-scratch additives Ceraflour-996 and Ceraflour-980 can be used. In addition, Ceraflor-996 also has good water resistance, which can be taken into account when designing the formulation.

The selection of solvent-free epoxy floor paint additives is similar to solvent-based epoxy floor paint.
